I recently heard about a friend of the family suddenly needing to permanently get on dialysis, so I called him to find out more about what happened.

He mentioned that he started having symptoms and went to the doctor.  That is when he found out he was in renal failure and was placed on dialysis.  This came as a shock to him.  He had no clue that he even had a decline in his kidney function prior.

I asked him if he had any pre-existing conditions, and he said he had high blood pressure for years.  High blood pressure is one of the top causes of kidney function decline in the US.  The doctor determined during this time of renal failure that he had an additional condition that can impact the kidneys called FSGS.  That is when I commenced to tell him what I have been noticing for years from working with clients with declines in kidney function…

His doctors over the years were likely aware of his decline in kidney function for a long time and did not say anything.  The doctors also did not educate him on the importance of protecting and monitoring kidney function in the midst of high blood pressure.  It is a major issue in the medical system.

If my family friend was to request his medical records for the past 5 years prior to being placed on dialysis, he would likely see his kidney function dropping on labs, and then become furious that no one told him anything.  If his kidney function was never analyzed whenever he went to his primary care doctor over the 5 years, this would also be very concerning.

There are several potential causes for declines in kidney function which can be found midway through this Page on my website.  If you have chronically high blood pressure, high blood sugar, or lupus, you are also at risk for kidney damage. But there is something you can do about it.

I encourage you to download the free handout on the Homepage of my website, How to Monitor Your Own Kidney Function. This is a way for you to be proactive about the health of your kidneys and perhaps discover declines before your doctor reports them to you.
