My Story

At 21 years old, I randomly one day started experiencing constipation and bloating that did not go away, but continued to get worse. Afterwhile, I started to experience frequent gas and heartburn. Later on I started accumulating one food intolerance after another. I began having symptoms not just in my digestive system, but also in other places of my body, such as my joints. I also noticed I was more emotional and what I ate affected how pleasant or not so pleasant my dreams were.

The two gastroenterologists I went to were helpful in that they conducted physical exams, endoscopies and colonoscopies to rule out anything serious and gave me the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). However, I did not get much more. It was disheartening to find out there was ‘no cure.’ The second doctor explained that it was not known where IBS came from. Although I greatly respected his honesty, it left me without solutions. He referred me to a basic nutritionist who gave me a simple list of foods to avoid, but by that point, this was not enough for my body to experience relief.

I discovered a small health food store near my home and spoke with the owner. He too had IBS. He was the first to give me hope and provide me with some answers. This was the beginning of my journey into natural medicine. I successfully started using dietary changes and herbs to reduce symptoms, but I was still having some difficulty. I began researching holistic health more than anything else. I would spend 2 hours in the grocery store looking at new foods, reading labels and trying to figure out what to eat to be okay. I gained a level of interest in health that surpassed that of my job at the time, and realized I wanted to pursue it.

The only place I knew to look at the time were nutrition schools, but in the back of mind, I knew basic nutrition was not enough to deal with what my body was going through. My parents told me about a health-based book they recently read and sent me their copy of it. I found myself immersed in this book and wanting to read it every evening. This was significant for me, because I used to not read outside of educational and work purposes. I read that the author was a Naturopathic doctor, so I researched what a Naturopathic doctor was and found it to be a much more comprehensive approach. I said, “That’s it, that’s what I want to do.”
