About 2 years prior to the beginnings of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) at 21 years old, I started experiencing bad breath and body odor. I switched from one deodorant to another, trying stronger and stronger brands. A memory that sticks out for me still was when I whispered over to my dad while we were in church and he immediately pulled out a mint for me. It was an embarrassing time. As a Naturopathic doctor, I now see how those were signs that my system was out of balance, so it made sense that digestive issues would show up later.
The first thing I did of course was go to the dentist. The dentist told me to start flossing. I have been flossing ever since, because it made my breath fresh again. However, over the years, I noticed something else that could aggravate my breath: food sensitivities.
I particularly noticed that if I frequently ate a lot of nuts, my breath would smell bad. Coincidentally, another symptom I had around the onset of bad breath and body odor was canker sores (sores mainly on my tongue and sometimes on my gums). I started eating a lot of yogurt and that would make them go away, but they always came back. As a Naturopathic doctor, I now know that the fact that they kept coming back was a sign that something was off.
Overtime, I started to notice that nuts also made me bloat, gave me pain within my head all the way to my right eye, promoted brain fog, and made me irritable. Nuts are a food sensitivity for me. Anything that is a food sensitivity can potentially promote poor digestion, food stagnation, and constipation.
Noticed that I did not say almonds, peanuts, or pistachios. I said an entire food group, called nuts. Pay attention to see if it is just certain foods or an entire food group that promotes bad breath for you.
For bad breath: 1) go to the dentist, 2) increase your dental hygiene, 3) make sure you are drinking enough water, 4) monitor your diet and check for foods that may cause bad breath for you, as well as any other symptom you may have.
