Intestinal spasms can be associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, bacterial infection in the gut, and Gastroenteritis, to name a few.

Spasms can create the following symptoms: pain, gas or bloating, sudden urge to use the restroom, changes in bowel movements (alternation between diarrhea and constipation), and mucus in the stools.

Addressing possible chronic conditions associated with spasms is important, and I’d also like to introduce a few antispasmodic herbs:

Passionflower – exhibits calming, antispasmodic and antiasthmatic properties. It helps with restlessness, irritability, anxiety and insomnia. It also contains libido-enhancing properties.

Wild yam – antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory. It aids in relieving inflammatory and spasm conditions of female reproductive organs and any pains caused by spasm. It can relax the nervous system, as well as decrease hot flashes and night sweats.

Cramp bark – contains antispasmodic properties and has shown anti-inflammatory and anxiety reducing activity. Traditional use of Cramp bark includes dysmenorrhea, threatened miscarriage and ovarian pain. It has also shown protective qualities for the gastrointestinal tract.

What you may notice amongst all of these is a tendency for herbs that reduce spasms to also reduce anxiety. Better coping with stress can help decrease its physical effects on your body, and that includes spasms. The beauty of herbs is that they can help you do both at the same time.
