Most people probably have Lavender laying around the house somewhere and it is not being used. After reading this article, I encourage you to pull it out of the drawer and start using it again until it is finished or give it to someone you know who could benefit from it. Lavender is most well known for being ‘calming.’ But how? And is that all this plant does? Let’s dive in.

Lavender relaxes muscular and nervous tension, and calms anxiety. It enhances a sense of well-being, it is uplifting and it can help with depression.

It helps to relieve tension headaches and can be used for trouble sleeping, especially when related to anxiety or an overactive mind. Lavender also reduces musculoskeletal pain and it can reduce spasms not only in our skeletal muscles but in our intestinal tract, which can thereby reduce gas and bloating.

Another fun fact is that Lavender is an insect repellant and a nice antiseptic for small cuts. In Chinese medicine, Lavender is considered cooling and alleviates Qi stagnation. Qi stagnation can happen multiple places in the body, and one of those places is the Liver. If Liver Qi becomes stagnated, you can start to have digestive problems. The liver and intestinal tract have a close relationship, so when I work with someone on their digestive tract, I often improve their liver function as well.

Lavender helps to calm the insecurities that are felt when one wants or tries to express their true thoughts and feelings. It can be great for those who feel the need to hide who they really are or how they really feel. Hiding or blocking this expression and communication can lead to worry, racing thoughts, anxiety, tension, constriction, and sleep disturbances. Hiding may have resulted from past rejection, and this hiding may lead you to hide from yourself, thus making it difficult to be aware of and acknowledge how you truly think and feel. You may also have feelings of being unlovable, unimportant, and unheard. Lavender encourages emotional honesty and helps you to get to the point where you can feel free to share your true self with others. More info on these aspects of Lavender can be found in the book Essential Emotions. Use of Lavender in this way may take some time to have its effects.

Lavender is a wonderful herb, but it can have greater effects when used with other herbs working toward the same goal, so I create herbal formulas for my clients. Just as there is great power and productivity in teamwork, there is great synergy in herbal combinations.
