I will start and end with this sentence: Being yourself and being authentic can often mean being open to rejection, false criticism, being persistently convicted enough about yourself to continuously move on / sift through people who do not value you and find the ones that do, and thus frequently challenging society to get better at accepting authenticity.
Not being yourself can lead to chronic illness. It is a form of stress that can lead to more emotional stress that may translate to a physical stress in your body (ex. high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, chronic pain), and unhealthy behaviors such as unhealthy eating, drugs, alcoholism, toxic relationships > which can lead to further physical stress in your body. Becoming yourself can contribute to potential reversal of certain ailments and thus lead to greater health.
I will give you an examples and realizations I personally had in the past, and the decision despite others’ views to continuously stick to being authentic. I think it is valuable to provide examples versus just giving you non-contextual statements like social media does.

Extroverted ‘high energy perky’ professionals, particularly those that are recruiters, are sometimes narrow-minded in certain ways because these mindsets are not challenged due to their positions of power, achieved status, magnetic energy, and likeability. It is through interacting with some of them over the years that I state the following:
– My often chill or introverted presenting demeanor should never be mistaken for lack of power, energy, influence, capability, or communication skills
– My boundaries to chaos, my boundaries to letting anyone have all my time and energy, and my boundaries to obvious inefficiencies should not be negatively described as lack of flexibility
– Sometimes interviewers need to think about how they could have communicated things better instead of thinking someone is not the right candidate because they did not provide the answer the interviewer wanted to a question posed without enough context.
– Some people’s underwhelm-ness with my chill or reserved side is due to skewed views and is not my problem. I am content with how I present.
– If someone has to often say things with potentially fake confidence and real or fake super high energy for you to be convinced of things, you have to ask yourself why you cannot receive it when someone says the same thing in a more chill or reserved way. I think most adults get to a place in life where they realize the high does not mean ‘gold’ or ‘green pastures’ long term.
Ask yourself when you encourage and ask for Authenticity from others, if you are actually willing and capable of respecting and embracing it, or if you notice you struggle in these areas, ask yourself if are you willing to grow into them.

When people reject authenticity, sometimes they are instead asking to be lied to, and ‘sometimes’ may be everyday depending on the career role they are in.
Sometimes people ask for authenticity and when they receive it they chastise it. This whole issue is similar to people being annoyed by some women wearing so much makeup to the point that you cannot recognize them, but then not remembering or having enough compassionate understanding regarding the reasons they wear it, which is often because of one or both of the following:
– They were disregarded when they didn’t before, are still disregarded when they walk around without it, and it really hurts them to experience that disregard. Who then really needs to change? It is easy for many to say these women need more confidence. It doubly easy for me to say society needs to change their viewpoints as well.
– They just like wearing it like jewelry and maybe you should just let them enjoy it

There was once instance some time ago where a recruiter who I could tell had perky type of energy and smiling all the time decided to deny me second-round interviews. I found out one of the reasons was because they thought I had low energy in the interview, and because of that, they assumed I would not be able to perform the physical aspects of the job. That couldn’t have been further from the truth. She just had a narrow idea of what energy looks like. She had a narrow idea of what potential productivity presents like.
Furthermore, this was a woman who did not look that physically fit, judging someone who she did not know had several years history of playing the more rigorous sports of basketball, soccer, and track, has enjoyed jogging a few times per week, has carried more physical strength than people assume based on my size, and could’ve probably far outlasted her in any exercise class. I know physique does not always showcase how fit someone is, but fit people tend to hang around fit people, and it was clear she had not been around enough different types of fit people to make such assumptions accurately. Needless to say, once I found that out, I gained a resolve to continue to act like myself further vs ‘bending’ for someone else’s narrow view.
